2007 Churchwide AssemblyThe Churchwide Assembly opens tonight with a plenary session highlighted by the first ballot for presiding bishop. Tuesday, Bishop Claire S. Burkat will preach at the daily Eucharist service. Plenary sessions are broadcast live in streaming audio and video at the Assembly website. Worship is not broadcast live but audio will be posted after each service. Watch the Assembly website and SEPANews blog for updates.
Thrivent employee among bridge collapse victims
Sherry Engebretsen, head of distribution strategies for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, was one of those killed when the bridge carrying Interstate 35W between Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, collapsed into the Mississippi River Aug. 1. Five persons are known killed in the accident, and eight are still missing.
"When a tragedy of this magnitude occurs in a metropolitan area, people's confidence in the stability of daily life is shaken," said the Rev. Craig E. Johnson, ELCA Minneapolis Area Synod.  "But as people of faith, our confidence is centered upon God who rushes to aid all people in their suffering," he said.
"All such tragedies leave us groping for ways to comprehend the sudden, unexpected loss and to find comfort and consolation," said the Rev. Peter Rogness, bishop, ELCA Saint Paul Area Synod. "Ultimately, comfort and consolation come from Christ's sustaining love and the dimension of his kingdom that overcomes death.  Of this much we can be assured," he said.
Please continue to pray with our sisters and brothers in Minnesota as they watch, wait and grieve.
Council presidents/vice presidents: Save the date!
Bishop Burkat's next event with council presidents and vice presidents will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. More details to follow!
ELCA as sent, not settled church
Bishop HansonIn a pre-Assembly conference call with reporters, ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson was asked about the church's commitment to evangelism. In his response, Hanson noted the difficulty of leading "a church that continues to manifest homogeneity in the midst of diversity and declining membership in the midst of living in a mission field." Despite the demographic realities, the ELCA is committed to "be what our name declares us to be: evangelical and Lutheran."
"This means changing the very culture of this church," Hanson said. "Lutherans cannot wait for the culture to make Christians for us or for Lutherans to have children to sustain the church."
The solution will be for Lutherans to stop seeing themselves as a "settled" church, anxious about its future, and to instead view itself as a "sent" church, "restless" to see the spread of the Gospel.
Bishop Hanson's conference call can be heard at the ELCA Audio News site.

Ministry resources
Take lay ministry to the next level
Looking for a way to energize gifted lay leaders in your congregation? The 2007 Faith and Leadership Academy will be held from October 13 - November 17. The Faith and Leadership Academy is sponsored each year by the Philadelphia Seminary and the SEPA Synod. The purpose is to help laity develop their gifts for leadership in the church and in the world.
The six-sessions (9:15 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.) will meet in the Brossman Center on the Seminary campus. The cost is $170 which covers tuition, notebooks, weekly outlines, morning refreshments, and noon lunches for the six Saturdays. Several congregations make the Academy an expectation for those who are council or teach.  Many congregations share the cost.
Brochures have been sent to all congregations. See the Synod website for more information, or contact George Keck by email or phone 610.489.1202.

"Science in God's World: Contributions and Controversies"
Our faith influences the way we think about such controversial topics as creation,  evolutionary biology and other current topics, such as stem cell research, cloning and environmental issues. Is science a gift from God?  Does the scientific discipline shed light on our understanding of God's world? Or, does science "get in the way" of that understanding sometimes.
This exciting course by an LTSP professor and theologian who  loves science will examine controversies and contributions involving the  disciplines of faith and science and will explore the stimulating  exchange of ideas between the two disciplines within a sound  understanding of Christian views on creation. Registration for the  course is open now through the end of September. The teacher is the Rev. Dr. Nelson Rivera. The course, featuring six sessions, is on line during  October and November. The tuition is $130 and a certificate is awarded  upon completion.
Information about the course is available at  the seminary website. Registration is available online.
