LAMPa: Taxpayer Protection Act would hurt PA
SEPA News UpdateThe Taxpayer Protection Act soon to come before the state Senate is similar to an initiative adopted in Colorado in the 1990s that " proved to be a disaster for governments, business, taxpayers, children, the sick, the poor, and the powerless," The Rev. Neil P. Harrison, executive director of Lutheran Advocacy Ministry in Pennsylvania, writes in an opinion piece published in The Morning Call, Allentown, on June 27.

As a pastor in Colorado in 2001, Harrison witnessed the "devastating" effects of recession on top of a decade of forced spending cuts. " Higher education funding had plunged by 31 percent. The share of low-income children lacking health insurance doubled, and by 2006 Colorado ranked last in the 50 states in providing poor kids with health insurance," he writes. "Is this the sort of results we want for Pennsylvania?"

LWR alerts health kit donors to contaminated toothpaste
Lutheran World Relief Is your congregation involved in the assembly of LWR health kits? LWR asks that donors double-check all toothpaste being included in their health kits. Please discontinue use of any toothpaste manufactured in China, as well as any Colgate toothpaste with the label "made in South Africa." Many of these toothpastes are found in dollar stores in certain states. News reports have indicated that certain toothpastes contain small amounts of the toxic chemical diethylene glycol (DEG). Among these is counterfeit Colgate toothpaste, which is labeled "made in South Africa," even though Colgate does not import toothpaste from that country.

"Wonderfully made" camp for LBGTQ teens
There is an exciting upcoming opportunity for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning) teens in grades 9-12 to safely share worship, examine their faith and enjoy fellowship at a Lutheran day camp in Philadelphia. The camp is being sponsored by the SEPA Synod Lutheran Bryson/Gay & Lesbian Task Force. Camp dates are August 1- 3, 2007. To protect the safety of individuals attending the camp the exact location will not be published but will be made available to participants, parents and guardians after registration. Overnight accommodations may be arranged for teens coming from a distance. Cost for the camp is $60. Scholarship assistance is available.

Learn more at the Synod youth website. Contact Molly Dean at mbeck@sepa.org or 610.278.7345 for registration information.
